I started Marist in the Fall of 1972. The combination of my father passing away when my brother and I were still young boys, and the many changes occuring in the Atlanta education system prompted our Mother to send my brother and me to Marist. It was still an all boys school. I started in 7th grade and my brother in 9th. The uniforms for 7th and 8th graders were very similar to those worn by today's young men. My brother had the privilege of wearing a more prestigious uniform and marching with his brethren. When I entered 9th grade the military became optional, and would soon disappear from the Marist campus. Young ladies starting attending Marist during my later years there. During my time we had the likes of Fr. Hartnett, Fr. Phab, Fr. Brogley, and Fr. Caffrey. Fr. Ralph was just a young man starting his teaching career. Alan Chadwick and Ron Bell had recently graduated from college and began teaching at Marist during the 70's. Marist still ran the triple option, and Jerry Queen controlled the diamond. Coach Murray made men out of young boys in the wrestling room. Bruce Hoff and Sergio Stadler were there teaching. We had no pool, no girl's sports, only one gym. Our cheerleaders came to us from other schools, until we got our own. Then, as now, Marist was a place of tradition, values, and character. Some things never change. Both of our children went to Marist. Samantha was in the class of 2007 and Spencer the class of 2009. Both had great experiences at Marist and will take a piece of Marist with them throughout the rest of their lives.
